The Motor1 portal speculates about the Mercedes g-Class, the smaller brother of the G-Class. We know from earlier previews that the car is expected to be angular and recognisable, in the style of the G-class. The car will be built on the MMA platform, so it will be technologically related to the Mercedes CLA-class concept, i.e. there will be optimisations that appeared in the development of the Mercedes EQXX. Sales of the g-class are unlikely to start before 2026.
Mercedes g-Class – what we know, what we expect
The Mercedes g-Class was revealed to the world at the Munich showroom, IAA Mobility 2023. Ola Kallenius, the company’s CEO, announced that the Little G will appear, the outline of its body was also shown, it is known that the car will be a all-wheel-drive electric, it may gain the Mercedes EQG designation with some additional symbol saying that it is a slightly smaller version of the car.
According to information obtained by Germany’s Handelsblatt, the g-Class is expected to go on sale in 2026 and may not be much shorter than the electric G-Class. The use of the MMA (Mercedes Modular Architecture) platform instead of a frame is expected to result in a vehicle with lower ground clearance. However, Kallenius promises that the electric car will be fun to drive on and off-road.
The MMA platform itself is a universal solution, in the style of those used today in the Mercedes EQA and EQB, but the g-Class is to be electric only. The architecture draws fully on the experience of testing the Mercedes EQXX, and will use an 800-volt system, inverters built on silicon carbide and two-speed gearboxes. Li-ion batteries will come in two variants: large capacities will be achieved with silicon anodes, lower car prices will come with LFP cells.
The Mercedes g-Class is set to roll out of the factory in Hungary, before its debut will see both refreshed versions of the Mercedes EQA and EQB, as well as a production variant of the Mercedes CLA concept:
