The Tesla Model 3 has been equipped with matrix headlamps since late 2021, when the first series of Giga Shanghai cars began to appear on the market. All indications are that the Tesla Model 3 Highland has matrix headlights as well, but for the time being it is only possible to use them in a rather limited way. But all it will take is a simple decision by Elon Musk to make the feature widely available.
Matrix headlights and the Tesla Model 3 Highland
The most noticeable use of the matrix headlights is to display the blurred word ‘Tesla’ in disco mode. Less noticeable, but functionally important, is the automatic adaptation of the headlights to the traffic in force – the lights shine differently in right and left-hand traffic, the corresponding function being activated using GPS location. This allows Tesla to use the same headlights worldwide.
Tesla owners, however, have been asking for years for the manufacturer to activate adaptive headlights that shade parts of the light field when they detect an approaching vehicle. Some even claim that they would give up a not-so-useful light show for this feature. Judging by the aforementioned capabilities, Tesla HAS the relevant control software, it just doesn’t want to share it yet.
It is possible that something will change in this regard in the near future. In May 2023, it was rumoured that the Tesla Model X could gain matrix lights instead of the current ones later this year. If the flagship car were to be fitted with them, Tesla could make the appropriate software available. Model X buyers would no longer feel disadvantaged by paying the most and getting the least advanced features.
But the active adaptive lighting function could also appear as a paid add-on. After all, Elon Musk announced that cutting margins could be offset by revenue from servicing and other services. The Tesla Model 3 Highland could have matrix headlamps that work like any other, which will learn new tricks when you buy the right package.
